Korea in 1953

The armistice signed on July 27 silenced the guns after more than three years of war, though Korea remained divided along a military demarcation line. Beforehand the Rhee government had released anti-communist POWs in protest at the truce, and in October it signed the Mutual Defense Treaty with the United States. The currency unit changed from won to hwan and the Labor Standards Act was enacted as postwar reconstruction began to take shape.
