Overview

Hyangiram Hermitage in Yeosu is a popular tourist attraction visited by approximately one million people annually, as well as a sanctuary for prayer to Avalokitesvara. The hermitage was originally founded by Monk Wonhyo but was not called Hyangiram Hermitage until the Joseon dynasty. The temple was named Hyangiram Hermitage because the sunrise over the horizon of the South Sea creates a spectacular view. The main hall and bell tower among other buildings were rebuilt in 2021 following a fire in 2009.
